Ferritin (FER) is distributed mainly in the liver, spleen, bone marrow and reticuloendothelial cells. Ferritin plays an important role in the absorption, accumulation and release of iron. The ferritin content in serum or plasma is very low and its concentration is proportional to the amount of iron accumulated in the human body. Clinically, it is mainly used to aid in the diagnosis of diseases related to iron metabolism, such as hemochromatosis and iron deficiency anemia.
