Folic acid (folate) is a type of compound, also known as vitamin B9. Folic acid is an essential nutrient for the human body. It has important physiological functions in the human body and is a coenzyme of many biochemical reactions. Folic acid is obtained from daily diet such as fruits, green leafy vegetables, yeast and organ meats, then absorbed by the small intestine and stored in the liver. Folic acid is mainly used in the clinical diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia. Serum folic acid measurement can provide an early indicator of in vivo folic acid status. However, because the concentration of folic acid in red blood cells is much higher than the concentration in serum, the quantification of folic acid in red blood cells will more accurately reflect the amount of folic acid accumulated in tissues.
